Key features of the proposed Taunton Academy


The proposed Taunton Academy would:

  • be an outstanding place of learning with high aspirations and opportunities for all
  • provide education for up to 1,150 students aged 11 – 19, including 100 in Years 12 and 13*
  • benefit from a £15-20 million capital investment for a part new build and part remodel/refurbishment of existing buildings
  • have dual specialisms of Science (with a strong focus on health sciences) and Sustainability
  • be rooted in Christian values, supported by chaplaincy and the wider church community
  • be fully inclusive, committed to meeting the needs of students with special educational needs and open to all students irrespective of ability or faith
  • meet the needs of all children, those who show academic, creative and/or sporting talent
  • have a strong focus on literacy, numeracy and ICT to ensure that all students are competent in these key areas
  • have a comprehensive and innovative curricular and extra-curricular programme, extending opportunities for students
  • have a strong focus on every student’s achievement and wellbeing, challenging expectations and promoting the personal and spiritual health of each
  • be at the heart of the community, providing resources and facilities for lifelong learning

* the Public Admissions Number for the proposed Academy could be between 180 and 210, for 3 reasons:

    • Possible constraints imposed by the nature of the site
    • Nature of the curriculum model proposed by the sponsors in the Education Brief
    • Accuracy of pupil projections for North Taunton over time
